Castle Leslie RC Members ‘Shine’ Last Weekend!

The first leg of the Cloncaw 2 Phase Event series took place last Sunday in glorious sunshine. Huge numbers attended this first leg of the league, where competitions must attend at least 3 legs and the final to be in with a chance of league prizes. Castle Leslie members were on top form after some recent cross country tuition from Geraldine Bellew and took the honours in both the Maxi and Mini class. Sara Davis riding Orla Sheehans’ Monmurry Sovereign were joint winners of the Maxi class with Barbara Johns on Woody Allen coming 4th and Louise Flynn on Miss Arkansas coming 6th. In the Midi Class Gabrielle Jackson riding Rockrimmon Buddy claimed Joint 1st prize with Grace Sheridan coming 6th on Superior Spirit. In the Mini Class Sharon McKeever came 6th on Cosmic Rollo.

Meanwhile, other CLRC members travelled to Killossery Lodge Stud for the Eventing Ireland Horse Trials where we had 3 members in the placings in the EI90A class after the dressage and showjumping scores. However faults on the cross country meant that Jo Evans riding My Festy Dancer dropped from 1st to 5th overall but a clean sheet across the board meant that Keady member Stephen Martin claimed the top spot on Butterscotch Major. In the CNC1*Amateur class, Ann Bowe added just 0.8 penalties to her dressage score to take 3rd place in this class aboard Festy Breeze.

XC Training - 22nd May - Cloncaw Equestrian

Many thanks to Geraldine for the recent XC training at Cloncaw! All members who attended got great confidence from the tuition.

RDS Team SJ Qualifer - Results

A great course designed by James Kernan meant that there was only one team on 0 faults at the halfway mark but with another 8 teams hot on their heels all with 4 faults. Two of these teams were the Castle Leslie Green team and the Castle Leslie Red team. Even though there were more clear rounds in the afternoon, the team placings were by no means assured and in most cases was left to the team captains to jump clear in order to secure a podium finish. Well done to the Castle Leslie Red Team of Conor, Jenny, Dawn, Louise who came 3rd overall narrowly missing out on securing the 'wildcard' entry for the AIRC Festival. The Castle Leslie Green team finished just outside the placings on 8 faults.

Check out the FB group page for all the pics and videos from the day. Also JumpInAction have all the official pics from the qualifier.

CLRC Training day at Kernans

Many thanks to everybody who attended the training at Kernans last Saturday. I think everybody had a positive experience and fingers crossed we remember the tips James gave us! Also huge thanks to Julie and Sara who organised the day! A massive amount of organisation went into the day and it was a credit to both of them that it was so successful.

The teams for the SJ Qualifier have been emailed out to everybody and are up on the FB Group page. I will post the running order here when it becomes available.

CLRC Training day at Cloncaw

Many thanks to Conor, Julie and Sara for organising the club SJ and Dressage Training Day at Cloncaw yesterday (Sunday 3rd April). Even though the weather did not exactly co-operate it did not dampen the spirits of all the club members who benefited from the training they received from Carolyn Mellor and William Anderson. The club will endeavour to make this at the very least an annual if not a bi-annual event due to all the positive comments regarding the day. Also thanks to Cloncaw Equestrian Centre and the Bellew family for the use of their facilities.

Masters Series Final Results

Big congratulations to Stephen Martin and Butterscotch Major who came 4th in the Masters Series final in Mullingar last Sunday. Well done!

Conor & Jo take regional titles for Castle Leslie Riding Club!

Castle Leslie Riding Club members took two titles at the final of the Equipet NER SJ League last Sunday. The event was held at Castle Leslie Equestrian Centre which welcomed members from clubs all over the North Eastern Region.

The day kicked off with the Open League Final which was won by Laura Carrick from the Cheval club on her mare Foxy Wee Lass with a double clear round and Dawn Clerkin on the Sailors Girl was second in this class. This mirrored the league placings with Laura taking the title and Dawn coming second.

In the Advanced intermediate class, the rivalry between Killossery's Jacqui Boland and Castle Leslie's Rebecca Brown has been the hot topic all throughout the league with the Dublin rider piping Rebecca in five of the previous legs. However in a thrilling finale Rebecca had the fastest time in the jump-off but with an unfortunate pole on the ground meant that Jacqui had a clean sweep in the league. Final results as follows: 1st Jacqui Boland (Killossery), 2nd Barbara Johns (Castle Leslie), 3rd Rebecca Brown (Castle Leslie), 4th Rosemary Bellew (Border Counties), 5th Sara Davis (Castle Leslie), 6th Louise Flynn (Castle Leslie). League Results: 1st Jacqui Boland (Killossery), 2nd Rebecca Brown (Castle Leslie), 3rd Louise Flynn (Castle Leslie), 4th Barbara Johns (Castle Leslie), 5th Martin O'Brien (Cheval), 6th Claire O'Dwyer (Cheval).

In the Inter B class it was Castle Leslie's Jo Evans riding My Fiesty Dancer who recorded the only double clear of the class to win on the day and the league title for the class. Final results: 1st Jo Evans (Castle Leslie), 2nd Samantha Johns (Castle Leslie), 3rd Francie Duffy (Castle Leslie). League results: 1st Jo Evans (Castle Leslie), 2nd Samantha Johns (Castle Leslie).

In the hotly contested Intermediate Class there were two Castle Leslie members on equal points coming into the final of the league. But it was Conor Meehan on Sonny's Mount who left all poles standing and clocked the fastest time to win the class on the day and the league overall. Stephen Martin on Butterscotch Major had an unfortunate knock down in the jump off to secure 4th place on the day and 2nd place in the league. Final results as follows: 1st Conor Meehan (Castle Leslie), 2nd Betty Robinson (Killossery), 3rd Sam Nesbitt (Mullaghmore), 4th Stephen Martin (Castle Leslie), 5th Niamh Murray (Castlehill), 6th Meredith Jackson (Castle Leslie). League results: 1st Conor Meehan (Castle Leslie), 2nd Stephen Martin (Castle Leslie), 3rd Declan McCarra (Mullaghmore), 4th Caroline Tierney (Mullaghmore), 5th Enda McKenna (Castle Leslie), 6th Meredith Jackson (Castle Leslie).

Mullaghmore member Marese McCarra had her first win of the league in the Advanced Primary class. Marese riding Cecil recorded a double clear round with her time closest to the optimum time to take the first place prize last Sunday. Evanne McKenna from Castle Leslie riding Bella Rosa was a very close second in the class which confirmed her 2nd place finish in the league overall. Final results: 1st Marese McCarra (Mullaghmore), 2nd Evanne McKenna (Castle Leslie), 3rd Timothy Fagan (Border Counties), 4th Noel Cullen (Milestone Lodge), 5th Alan Fitzpatrick (Drynam), 6th Pamela Steenson (Mullaghmore). League results: 1st Alan Fitzpatrick (Drynam), 2nd Evanne McKenna (Castle Leslie), 3rd Marese McCarra (Mullaghmore), 4th Noel Cullen (Milestone Lodge), 5th Eithne O'Hanrahan (Border Counties), 6th Kay Treanor (Castle Leslie).

In the last class of the day, Emma Kingham also from Mullaghmore club recorded one of only two double clear rounds to claim first place as she was closest to the optimum time. She was just ahead of Una Hannan of Castlehill club who had the other double clear. However this did not change the league standings coming into the final as Fiona McCarra from Mullaghmore had a very successful league and walked away with the league title. Final results: 1st Emma Kingham (Mullaghmore), 2nd Una Hannan (Castlehill), 3rd Fiona McCarra (Mullaghmore), 4th James Duff (Cheval). League results: 1st Fiona McCarra (Mullaghmore), 2nd Una Hanan (Castlehill), 3rd Emma Kingham (Mullaghmore), 4th James Duff (Cheval).

That wraps up the Regional League for 2015 and many thanks to everybody who competed and helped out on the day. Special thanks to Gemma Humphries for taking all the club photography check out the photos on facebook!

Prizes Galore for Castle Leslie Riding Club at League Final

All roads led to Killossery Equestrian Centre just outside Ashbourne last Sunday 2nd March for the final of the Equipet NER Showjumping League. With the league tables very close in all grades after the final leg at Cloncaw Equestrian Centre the previous Sunday it was all to jump for by our club members.

Olivia Johns riding her own Derryhee Sirocco kicked off the morning in fine style coming 2nd in the Advanced Open/Open class and this result meant a 3rd place overall in the league on a total of 33 points.

Ann Bowe on Gentle Breeze took home 3rd place in the hotly contested Advanced Intermediate class, but it was Louise Flynn riding Miss Arkansaw who got placed in the league overall on a total of 15 points.

It was down to David Breakey riding What’s it all about Alfie to take home 2nd place at the final of the Intermediate class and this result cemented his 2nd place overall in the league standings on a total of 26 points. Conor Meehan had a very consistent run of results throughout his first league as an Intermediate rider and although not placed in the final competition on Sunday, he was in 6th place overall in the league on Sonnys Mount. Our club chairman Meredith Jackson riding his own Miss Arkansaw was a close 7th place in the league on a total 17 points.

The Advanced Primary class has been the most hotly contested grade all throughout the league and it was our very own Evanne McKenna riding Bella Rossa who takes home 1st prize in the league after another very consistent 3rd place in the final. Followed closely behind by Kathy Nolan who took 4th place at the final and 3rd in the league and Sarah McAree just missing out in the league placings in 7th place overall.

However it was a runaway success for our very own Jane Leighton who took 1st place at the final and 1st place overall in her first year as a competitor at Primary Level. Jane riding Milfords Lady has had a very good run of results over the last number of weeks and this victory is well deserved!

Well done to all club members on this first league of the year!

Equipet NER SJ League 2014 - Castle Leslie EC Results

We were on home tuff for the 3rd Leg of the Equipet NER SJ League on Sunday 9th February. We had a great turnout from clubs all over the region and even the weather was as good as could be expected (well almost!). The morning kicked off just ahead of time with the warmup class and then we were straight to the first league class of the day. Aoife Magure made the trip from Killossery to be the only double clear in the Open/Advanced Open League Class to win outright on her mount Main Attraciton. Neighbouring club member Rosemary Bellew came 2nd on Cloncaw Chief with host club members Francie Duffy coming 3rd on Coragh Maxwell Lady and Olivia Johns on Derryhee Sirocco coming 4th.

The Advanced Intermediate class had all spectators at the edge of their seats with the ever consistent Laura Carrick on My Foxy Lass from Cheval Riding Club whipping round the course in a time of 28.94 seconds nearly 1 second clear of her nearest rival Castle Leslie's Louise Flynn on Miss Arkinsas. In third can Jacqui Boland on Maverick Nairi in a time of 30.06 from the Dorsey club and another visitor on the day Kiera Cooney on King of Heights coming fourth in a time of 30.75. Two more Castle Leslie members made up the final placings with Eva McKenna riding Cosmic Rolo coming 5th and Ann Bowe riding Gentle Breeze coming 6th respectively.

Cheval Riding Club also took top honours in the Inter B class with Rache Switzer riding Copy Step recording the only double clear of the class. It was Castle Leslie members who took the next 3 placings with Eva McKenna riding Lizbizogan Swatch in 2nd, Sara Davis on Bailey on 3rd and Aine Reilly on Bobby Dazler in 4th.

As usual the Intermediate class was the most competitive of the day and it was the host club chairman Meredith Jackson riding Miss Arkinsas who took the honours in this class beating his nearest rival by over 1.5 seconds to take home first prize. Nuala Stafford from the Cheval Club came second in a time of 30.48 just ahead of Castle Leslie's Conor Meehan who was clear in a time of 30.68. Not to be outdone Border Counties Dean O'Neill riding Cloncaw Chief came 4th and Laura Murphy Finn on Sentanta Express came 5th with Declan Gaffney from Killossery Club riding Mr Copperfield came 6th.

The biggest class of the day was the Advanced Primary class and Rachel Carey from Drynam club riding Drynam Rosie was closest to optimum time to take home the red ribbon. Evanne McKenna riding Bella Rosa from Castle Leslie club were 2nd, with Declan McCarra from Mullaghmore Club coming 3rd. Another Castle Leslie member Kathy Nolan came 4th with Killishandra Shakira with another Mullaghmore Club member Ann Marie Gilliland coming 5th. Roisin Dick riding Cloncaw Smartie from Border Counties came 6th.

With only 2 competitors in the Inter A class, it was local rider Caroline Tierney who came first with the only double clear riding Hugo Parker. Petrina Reilly from Castle Hill came 2nd riding Fieldwood Buddy.

The last class of the day saw Mullaghmore member Charlene Sherry riding Killytur Johnny get closes to the optimum time to take home first place, with Castle Leslie member Jane Leighton coming 2nd on Milford Lady. Castle Hill took 3rd and 5th place with Alison Molloy on Hilltop Fiesty and Barbara Harford on Nade2hda respectively and Janie Mackarel on General's Daughter taking 4th place for Mullaghmore in this class.

The league is certainly hotting up after the results yesterday! The next leg will be at Castle Hill Equestrian Centre, Julianstown this Sunday 16th February at 10am sharp. Then the last leg before the final will be at Cloncaw Equestrian Centre, Glaslough on Sunday 23rd February before the Final in Killossery on Sunday 2nd March.

Castle Leslie Riding Club wish to thank all the competitors for making the show such a success and we look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Castle Leslie Riding Club AGM 2013

The 2013 AGM of Castle Leslie Riding Club was held recently. It was very encouraging to see a great number of both current and previous members attending. The AGM was opened by our current Chairman Meredith Jackson and the AGM kicked off with the minutes of the previous AGM being nominated and seconded, then the secretary’s report for 2013 was read out. It was great to recap on what was a very successful year for the club with members being placed in the NER Winter Showjumping League at the beginning of the year, then one of our teams winning the Horseware Team Showjumping RDS Qualifier in Kernans in May. With results in many classes in the AIRC Festival in June, the members then turned their attention to the Horse Trials Qualifiers for the National Championships. The only distraction to this was the club making their first trip as representatives of the North Eastern Region at the Riding Club Team Showjumping Championships at the Horseshow in the RDS in August.  Several members were also successful at the Horse Trials Championships in September.

With members also competing at other non-riding club events on both sides of the border, we had members  successfully competing at 2 phase and Eventing Ireland events as well as hunter trials, SJI and Dressage Ireland.
All committee positions were then deemed vacant, and previous Chairman and Vice-Chairman were re-elected. With our secretary Heather Camblin retiring from official club duties this year, new club secretary Dawn Clerkin took over this role for 2014. Heather had been club secretary for over 35 years and as a small token of appreciation for all her hard work and contribution to the club, she was presented by Meredith with a Galway Crystal vase. All other positions were re-elected as per the agenda.

With the 2014 NER Showjumping League kicking off at the end of January and running through to the first week of March, there is already lots to look forward to in 2014. The club will also be holding their annual dinner dance in January.
